The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) recently bestowed posthumously the title of "March 8th Red Banner Pacesetter", a national award for outstanding women, on Zhou Nan, former Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Rheumatology in Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital.
Zhou was dedicated to improving the health of Tibetan people. She gave up the opportunity to work in Beijing and chose to work in the hospital in Tibet after graduating from Peking Union Medical College in 2009, despite the cold and oxygen-deficient conditions in Tibet.
On August 2, 2019, she was killed in a car accident in Cangxi County, Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
In the past 10 years, Zhou treated more than 1,000 inpatients and thousands of outpatients annually, and she never had any medical errors, accidents or complaints.
She possessed exquisite medical skills and took the lead in the autonomous region in operating on critically ill patients with lupus encephalopathy and vasculitis, filling a number of medical gaps in the medical field in Tibet.
In addition, Zhou established the Rheumatology and Immunology Association of Tibet, which plays an important role in improving the overall medical and academic standards of rheumatology and immunization in the region.
She also undertook teaching tasks at the Internal Medicine Department of Tibet University Medical College and the Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital. She taught what she has learned to local medical staff without any reservations. Zhou's story had moved many Chinese people. In 2018, she was honored with the title "Good Doctor in China" by the Central Commission for Guiding Cultural and Ethical Progress of the CPC and the National Health Commission.
The ACWF granted the national award for outstanding women to Zhou, calling on women across the country to learn from Zhou who dedicated herself to medical work and always showed affection and love to ordinary people.
